5:00 pm to 7:00 pm Pacific / 8:00 pm to 10:00 Eastern

Leader: Shinzen Young
Type of Program: Sharpening
Prerequisites:
Some previous experience with Focus on See.

Description: Hone your ability to work with visual experience (physical sight, mental image, visual rest, and visual flow).

Part of this program will cover how to subdivide the themes into finer categories. Examples of subdividing include:

  • Subdividing See In by locations
  • Subdividing See Out by colors
  • Selective attention on the brightness aspect of See Rest
  • Selective attention on the darkness aspect of See Rest

Part of this program will also involve special exercises. Special exercises themselves are not on the Basic Mindfulness “Grid” but they are closely related to the techniques that are on the grid. The primary purpose of special exercises is to sharpen your ability to implement the standard techniques.

An example of a special exercise related to visual experience is the POP (Person, Object, Place) analysis of thought content.

Reading: A short suggested reading will be emailed to you with the call-in details.

Fee: $10 per person (This fee does not include charges, if any, by your long distance phone service.)

FEBRUARY 11 (Saturday PM) - Breath Focus: Advanced Perspectives on a Basic Practice
10:00 am to 2:00 pm Pacific / 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm Eastern

Leader: Shinzen Young
Type of Program: Special Offering
Prerequisites:
No previous experience necessary.

Description: Breath focus is often thought of as an elementary starter practice. But with a proper understanding, it can lead all the way to Enlightenment. On the other hand, it can sometimes become a dead end, producing calm but failing to bring deep insight and purification. The purpose of this workshop is to compare and contrast various breath practices within Vipassana, Zen, and Vajrayana. The program will include:

  • A clear conceptual model for how breath works as a focus.
  • How to avoid dead ends.
  • A chance to sample several distinct forms of breath focus.
  • A chance to discuss your experiences around breath with a senior teacher.
  • How breath fits into Shinzen's Five Ways system.

Reading: A short suggested reading will be emailed to you with the call-in details.

Fee: $20 per person (This fee does not include charges, if any, by your long distance phone service.)

FEBRUARY 12 (Sunday AM) - Focus on Rest
8:00 am to 12:00 pm Pacific / 11:00 am to 3:00 pm Eastern

Leader: Shinzen Young
Type of Program: Core Curriculum
Emphasis:
Foundations
Prerequisites:
No previous experience necessary.

Description: Learn how to find/create pleasant restful states in all three sensory systems: visual, auditory, and somatic.

If you say “meditation” to the average person, they will probably get the mental image of someone sitting cross-legged on the floor trying to mellow out and release stress. Many, perhaps most, traditional forms of meditation involve simple, soothing experiences. There is a good reason for the central role of tranquility practices of both East and West. They create a positive feedback loop. The more you concentrate on soothing rest, the more soothing it becomes, thereby motivating you to concentrate even more. This positive learning loop creates snowballing growth in your concentration power.

Restful states are frequently present in daily life, but most people fail to notice and enjoy them because they have neither the concepts nor the vocabulary needed to recognize them. This program will change that.

Reading: A short suggested reading will be emailed to you with the call-in details.

Fee: $20 per person (This fee does not include charges, if any, by your long distance phone service.)
