During a series of talks at a week-long retreat in June, 2002, Shinzen teaches a formula: E + M + E = I + P  (Equanimity + Mindfulness + Experience = Insight + Purification) that reveals something deep and powerful about the psycho-spiritual nature of human beings.  While explaining the terms in the formula, he maintains that understanding the meaning of the words grows over time, as meditation contributes to "vertical" learning – that is, understanding the words at deeper and deeper levels.
